HeyGen review

HeyGen charges in credits. Its pricing page does not convert them to minutes, but its help centre does: 16 credits a minute for an Avatar IV photo look, 31 for a video look, 48 for Avatar V. On 29 Sep 2026 it listed Free (3 videos a month, up to 1 minute each), Creator at $29 a month or $24 billed annually for 600 credits, Pro from $49 ($41 annual) for 1,000 credits and scaling to 100,000 credits at $4,300, and Business at $149 plus $20 a seat. A credit costs about $0.04 to $0.05 for most tiers, which puts an Avatar IV photo-look minute at about $0.77 on Creator monthly billing.

The credit ladder

The page lists Pro as one plan with the same features at every tier; only the monthly credits change. Our division of each tier’s price by its credits:

Credits a monthMonthly billingPer creditAnnual billing (per month)Per credit
600 (Creator)$29$0.048$24$0.040
1,000$49$0.049$41$0.041
1,500$74$0.049$62$0.041
2,000$99$0.050$82$0.041
3,000$149$0.050$124$0.041
5,000$240$0.048$200$0.040
10,000$460$0.046$384$0.038
20,000$900$0.045$752$0.038
50,000$2,250$0.045$1,877$0.038
100,000$4,300$0.043$3,586$0.036

The finding: below 10,000 credits there is almost no volume discount (about 4 to 5 cents a credit throughout), so moving up a tier buys headroom, not a cheaper credit. Annual billing is what lowers the price, by about 17%. Business at 1,500 credits ($149, or $119 annual) costs twice the Pro tier with the same credits, and the difference pays for seats, 60-minute videos and team features.

What a credit buys

The pricing page’s FAQ says a credit is the single currency and that usage depends on the model, duration and complexity. HeyGen’s help centre gives the rates (“How to Use Credits on HeyGen”, read 29 Sep 2026):

FeatureCreditsOn Creator, monthly ($0.048 a credit)On Creator, annual ($0.040)
Avatar III photo look, per minute7$0.34$0.28
Avatar IV photo look, per minute16$0.77$0.64
Avatar IV video look, per minute31$1.50$1.24
Avatar V, per minute48$2.32$1.92
Video translation with lip-sync, speed mode, per minute6$0.29$0.24
Video Agent, standard mode, per minute40$1.93$1.60

The costs are our division and assume Creator’s whole 600 credits. The help centre adds that credit use may vary by feature, model, duration or generation type and that the product shows the credit cost before you generate. Business credits can be topped up at $0.05 each in blocks of 100 for $5; Creator and Pro cannot buy one-time packs and upgrade a tier instead. Rollover is stated: monthly subscribers’ unused credits roll over for one more month, annual subscribers’ credits accumulate until renewal, and nothing carries over after cancellation.

Before you commit

  • Multiply your monthly minutes by the credits-per-minute rate for the avatar type you would use, then pick the tier that covers it.
  • Ask which model version generates your video; the same script can cost differently.
  • Extra seats on Business cost $20 a month each.

Translation and dubbing quality are not stated on the pricing page and we have not assessed them; comparisons that call one tool best at lip-sync rest on someone else’s tests.

Method

Researched from HeyGen’s pricing page, including the credit-tier data embedded in the page, read 29 Sep 2026. USD list prices; per-credit figures are our division. Nothing here comes from using the product.

Synthesia against HeyGen puts both on cost per minute; Synthesia states its allowance in minutes; the video tools hub compares five tools; invideo AI also uses credits. Every plan is in the pricing tracker.

Update log

  1. Rewritten from the pricing page: replaced unsourced claims about translation strength and a creator ROI example; added the full credit-tier ladder, cost per credit, the rollover rules and the Business plan. Later same day: added credits per minute from HeyGen's help center and the cost per minute derived from them.
